Kuroshitsuji Dramatis Personae

Main Characters

Sebastian Michaelis – The Demon butler summoned by Ciel to serve him and aid in obtaining revenge against his parents’ murderers. He pursued Ciel’s soul hungrily, and with more enthusiasm than demons usually display. Since he can never consume Ciel’s soul, he is simply one hell of a butler… for all of eternity.

Lord Ciel Phantomhive – Formerly the Earl Phantomhive, the Queen’s Guard Dog. His parents were murdered by the Queen’s Spider, whose heir, Alois Trancy, formed a contract with the demon Claude Faustus, who also obsessively desired Ciel’s soul. In the end, Alois formed another contract with the demon Hannah Anerfeloz, the terms of which dictated Ciel’s transformation into a demon himself, so that neither Sebastian nor Claude would ever know the pleasure of devouring his exquisite soul.

Lady Elizabeth Ethel Cordelia Midford – Ciel’s betrothed. She is sweet and usually quite happy and loves to have fun, but she is now heartbroken by Ciel’s sudden departure. She has decided to stay at the Phantomhive manor until he returns, and vows to do whatever it takes to find Ciel and bring him back.

Mey-Rin – The maid of Phantomhive Estate. Formerly an assassin, given work in the household by Sebastian. She is red-haired, and in reality quite attractive. However, she wears thick glasses to obscure her identity, and takes them off only to fight the enemies of Lord Phantomhive. The character she plays is nervous and rather clumsy, often breaking china or mistaking shoe polish for wood wax due to the blurry lenses. However, part of this is due to her nervousness around Sebastian, since she has a crush on him.

Baldroy (aka Bard) – The cook of the Phantomhive Estate. Formerly a soldier, he often uses war tactics in the execution of everyday chores, which ends up in disaster on a regular basis. He is still young and has quite a temper, but his loyalty to the Phantomhive manor is absolute. He is often seen smoking cigarettes, and sometimes he drinks as well.

Finian – The groundskeeper of Phantomhive Estate, formerly a medical experiment victim which bestowed upon him unnatural strength, despite his scrawny young body. He is very sweet and kind-hearted, but at times he does not realize his own strength. He often tries to help, but usually just makes a mess. For example, he raises an entire marble pillar and smashes it to bits while attempting to catch a mouse in season one.

The Viscount Lord Druitt – Aleister Chamber, a wealthy young aristocrat who is often charged with various crimes but is, unfailingly, either never convicted, or allowed to pay his way out of trouble. He is an enthusiastic, over-zealous connoisseur of fine food, wine, art, and women. His position in society is very important to him, and he enjoys fauning over other nobles to receive their approval.

Grell Sutcliff – Formerly the butler of Lady Red (Ciel’s Aunt), he assumed her persona when he murdered her after they were both discovered working together as Jack the Ripper. Since he was not a demon, but a grim reaper, his performance as a butler was very poor, all his chores turning into suicide attempts. The flamboyant “Red Reaper,” his chainsaw death scythe is almost as big as his… ego.

Lau and Ran-mao – Lao is a Chinese nobleman and a member of the Shanghai Mafia, leader of an opium den and head of the British branch of a trading company, Kon Ron. He often acts as though he knows important information about a situation, only to reveal later that he actually has no idea what is going on. He is never seen without his mysterious escort, the witch Ran-mao, who is also his personal assassin. She almost never speaks, her only line in season one being “Liar,” and in season two, “Well, you heard him.” However, she often lends her fighting skills to aid Ciel and Sebastian... while Lau hides under a table or something.

Lady Cassandra Lydia Rowan – also known as the Queen’s Serpent, Lady Rowan’s task is to bring intel to the Queen, by any means necessary… She is incredibly beautiful and dark, which allows her to seduce corrupted nobles and either assassinate them or glean important information to deliver as blackmail. Little is known about her family or how she came to be in her current position. She is clearly noble and highly intelligent, but acts slightly common, devoid of the aloof airs and superficial mannerisms of upper-class society.

Clara – Lady Rowan’s maid. Two years ago, at age eighteen, Clara came to work for Lady Rowan. Her parents died when she was thirteen, and she was forced into a life of prostitution. Lady Rowan found her and offered her proper employment. She has since renounced the company of men, and looks upon her mistress with profound admiration, ready to demonstrate her complete devotion...

Lady Gwendolyn Olivia Whitney – a spoiled, lovelorn young aristocrat who summons Samael in a moment of drunken passion. She hates Lady Rowan, whom she found in bed with her husband (who was nothing more than a target for Cassandra). She is a strawberry blonde socialite, popular among the other nobles, and often seen wearing the latest pastel fashions from Paris. While she despises Lady Rowan and is confused and appalled by Lilith, she also envies their seductive darkness, for it is a trait she knows she will never have the courage to possess, and believes herself to be immune to its power.

Samael – the fallen angel of ancient lore, he was Lilith’s lover at one point, but she has since moved on and prefers capturing the hearts of humans. His depression gives him a disheveled appearance, and he is spitefully jealous of anyone who occupies Lilith’s attention. He is obsessed with her soul, and is prepared to do whatever it takes to be close to her again, regardless of whom he has to manipulate, or whose heart he has to break in the process.

Lilith – Adam’s first wife. The goddess of darkness, she is powerfully seductive, which allows her to capture human hearts. She is also a soul-eater; however since she is not fully demon, but half angel, she needs her victims’ Life as well as their Death. She assumes souls yield greater sustenance than hearts, and, upon discovering Lady Rowan, decides to pursue her soul, becoming obsessed with her beauty and darkness (and finding mirrors to be rather boring company).
